Building Better with Natural Mineral Fiber

Construction and insulation grade sepiolite leverages the mineral's natural fibrous structure and exceptionally low thermal conductivity to enhance a wide range of building materials. When incorporated into cement, plaster, and panel formulations, sepiolite fibers act as natural micro-reinforcement.

The mineral's inherent fire resistance — it is classified as non-combustible (Euroclass A1) — makes it invaluable in fireproof coatings, fire doors, and passive fire protection systems. Sepiolite maintains its structural integrity at temperatures exceeding 800°C.

In thermal insulation applications, sepiolite-based boards and panels deliver low-lambda performance while remaining lightweight and easy to install. The mineral's natural porosity traps air within its fiber structure, creating an effective thermal barrier.

Our construction grade is produced in both powder and short-fiber forms to suit different incorporation methods. We work closely with building material manufacturers to optimize grade specifications for their specific formulation requirements.

Where Construction & Insulation Grade Is Used

🏗️

Thermal Insulation Boards

Sepiolite-based insulation panels provide excellent thermal performance with the added benefit of natural fire resistance. Used in walls, roofs, and industrial equipment insulation.

🔥

Fireproof Coatings & Panels

Incorporated into intumescent coatings, fire doors, and fire-rated partition walls. Maintains structural integrity above 800°C for passive fire protection.

🧱

Cement & Mortar Additive

Improves workability, reduces cracking, and enhances water retention in cement mortars. The fiber reinforcement increases flexural strength of thin-layer applications.

🏠

Plaster & Render Systems

Used in lightweight plasters and external render systems. Improves adhesion, reduces shrinkage cracking, and enhances the insulating properties of the finished surface.

🏭

Industrial Insulation

Applied in high-temperature industrial settings — kiln linings, pipe insulation, and furnace panels where mineral fiber insulation is required.

🌊

Marine & Offshore Construction

Used in fire-rated marine panels and offshore platform construction where non-combustible, lightweight insulation materials are mandatory.

Key Advantages

01
Natural Fire Resistance

Euroclass A1 non-combustible rating without any chemical flame retardant additives — pure mineral-based fire safety.

02
Low Thermal Conductivity

At 0.06–0.08 W/m·K, sepiolite provides excellent insulation performance comparable to synthetic mineral fiber alternatives.

03
Fiber Micro-Reinforcement

Natural sepiolite fibers strengthen cement and plaster matrices, reducing cracking and improving long-term durability of building surfaces.

04
Lightweight Solution

With bulk density as low as 0.15 g/cm³, sepiolite significantly reduces the weight of insulation panels and building components.

05
Asbestos-Free Alternative

Sepiolite provides similar fibrous reinforcement and insulation properties as asbestos with none of the health risks — a safe, natural replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sepiolite a safe alternative to asbestos in construction?
Yes, sepiolite is a safe, non-carcinogenic mineral fiber. Unlike asbestos, sepiolite fibers do not pose respiratory health risks and are approved for use in building materials worldwide.
What fire rating does construction grade sepiolite achieve?
Sepiolite achieves Euroclass A1 (non-combustible) classification under EN 13501-1. It maintains structural integrity at temperatures exceeding 800°C.
How much sepiolite should be added to cement mixes?
Typical addition rates are 2–8% by weight of cement, depending on the desired properties. Higher rates improve insulation; lower rates focus on crack resistance and workability.
Can sepiolite replace mineral wool in insulation panels?
Sepiolite-based panels offer comparable thermal performance with better fire resistance and no skin irritation during installation. They are increasingly used as a premium alternative.
What is the minimum order for construction grade sepiolite?
Minimum order is 20 metric tons. We offer technical support and sample quantities for building material manufacturers developing new formulations.
